On October 5th, 2017, students and staff participated in the First Annual Student Harvest at the DLA Elementary Gardens.
In June, EQ staff planted a variety of starter plants, including roma and better boy tomatoes, basil, oregano, and jalapeno, serrano, tabasco, and ghost peppers. The planting would expand over the summer to include American and Japanese eggplant and a pumpkin plant that has more than overgrown her small flower pot.
Students who ranked highest on Classroom Dojo points were selected to participate in the harvest. Approximately 30 lbs. of produce were picked, and students were allowed to select items to bring home.
The gardens should be ready for another harvest in late fall, so students will once again get an opportunity to pick veggies and learn more about the gardening process. Pumpkins will be ready to go in another week or so and will be awarded through a raffle, with students receiving raffle tickets based on scholarly behavior in school.
